Metals React With Acids

Reaction of metal with acid:

Metals usually react with acid to displace hydrogen from the acid and form salts. The less reactive metals, however, do not displace hydrogen from acids. The reaction of acid with the metals depend not only on the reactivity of the metal  but as well as depends on nature of acid. For eg:

Reaction of aluminum with strong acid like HCl and weak acid like acetic acid :

2Al+6HClrightarrow 2AlCl_3+3H_2(rapid)

2Al+6CH_3COOHrightarrow 2Al(CH_3COO)_3+3H_2(slow)

Based on the reactivity of metal :

  • Sodium reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid vigorously due to its higher reactivity to form sodium chloride and hydrogen gas.
  • 2Na+2HClrightarrow 2NaCl+H_2

  • Magnesium  reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid quite rapidly, but much less vigorously than does sodium, to form  magnesium chloride and hydrogen.
  • Mg+2HClrightarrow 2MgCl_2+H_2
